June 2026 K-Pop Review: A Mixed Bag of Releases
The month of June 2026 has come and gone, and it's time to reflect on the K-pop music scene. As an avid fan, I've been eagerly awaiting the latest releases, but this month's offerings have left me somewhat underwhelmed. The first half of the month was particularly strong, with several highly anticipated albums and singles, but the second half felt like a lull, with some disappointing title tracks and a lack of standout releases.
One of the most notable aspects of June was the dominance of SM Entertainment. Their artists, including SHINee, RIIZE, and Hearts2Hearts, dominated the charts and received glowing reviews. However, it's worth noting that their songs could have been even more impressive if they had received music videos. This is a common trend in the industry, where the lack of visual content can sometimes diminish the impact of a song.
Despite the strong showing from SM, June 2026 was not without its flaws. The month saw a resurgence of some of the year's worst trends, with truly awful work from LE SSERAFIM+ILLIT+Katseye, VVS, ATEEZ, Evan, and AHOF. These songs, along with a veritable fleet of 6 and 7-rated releases, dragged down June's overall rating. It's been a challenging year for K-pop, with many harsh reviews and a general sense of disappointment.
I typically love summer in K-pop, but this year has been a bit of a letdown. The first few weeks of July are looking quite barren, with no exciting releases on the horizon.
